It is generally accepted that there are 3 hydroponic pumping arrangements, submersible, non-submersible and the so called semi-submersible. Submersible pumps are, as the name suggests, completely submerged in the nutrient solution, non-submersible is an external unit outside of the nutrient solution and the semi-submersible stands in the solution but the top of the pump must, electrically, remain dry. It's also generally accepted that only the first 2 pumps are normally used.
